Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken on an outdoor stage at the Rock Hard Festival in Balingen, Germany.

Time

It must have been late afternoon, the sun was already setting, so Amorphis had very nice natural lighting.

Lighting

The setting late afternoon sun was just the perfect lighting here; in addition there was of course the stage lighting, which cannot be influenced and sometimes is really difficult, but here noch problems with that.

Equipment

I used a Canon 1D Mk II with Canon 24-70mm/2,8 lens; no tripod or flash, I never use tripod or flash while shooting concerts.

Inspiration

I love metal music and also love taking pictures during live concerts, capturing the special mood of such events.

Editing

I use Adobe Lightroom and/or Photoshop for post-processing. Here I converted into b&w and toned the image, also levels/contrast.

In my camera bag

Most of the time I have two camera bodies with me (these days 2 Canon 5D Mk III), also several Canon lenses (zoom and prime lenses); no flash!

Feedback

Practise, practise, practise! In my opinion concert images, especially of indoor events, are not easy to capture. The lighting is often a real challenge. But with love of the music and attending lots of shows come better images. You learn to press the trigger in the right moment and to handle the changing light situations.
