This was a photo that I had snapped for an engagement shoot near Edmonton, Ab, Canada.Time
We had decided to shoot at sunset and wait for the stars to come out for photos that would be really unique.Lighting
I highlighted the tree with a lantern to draw the viewer's eye to the couple sharing an intimate moment underneath.Equipment
I used my Canon 6D, a wide angle lens and tripod (for the long exposure).Inspiration
Night time shots are my favorite to take. There is something really enchanting about the world at night, a side of things that many people don't always see. So the next step for me was to see if I could capture a night image during an engagement photoshoot. This couple was adventurous enough to trust my vision and did a great job of holding still while still conveying the feelings they have for one another. It was a lot of fun.Editing
Honestly, not much was done, but I did bring out the highlights more to showcase the tree.In my camera bag
That varies, but on an engagement shoot or a wedding day I like to bring some odds and ends for the couple. This includes kleenex (for happy tears), a brush for unruly hair, sparklers for long exposures and tide to go for any spills.Feedback
Be honest with yourself and your clients. This type of photography is not for everyone. It takes a lot of patience to capture things at night, especially with people who have never done such a thing before. I would only offer this type of shoot to people that you know would be happy to attempt a night adventure with you. However, when you do have the right people, it can make for some truly unique and magical photos.
