Location
This photo was taken at Presque Isle Park in Marquette, Michigan on the shore of Lake Superior. The side of the park I was shooting at is known as Sunset Point; a popular location for kayakers and paddle boarders.Time
It was early May, right at sunset. I was set up in this location for hours that day having a farewell cookout. Everyone in that area is always so spontaneous when it comes to exploring the great outdoors; you really never know what you're going to see. I always make sure to have my camera on me!Lighting
Dusk had just fallen, but had given me a little bit of the warmer hues from the sun. It grew dark quickly, but the reflection from the lake helped bring a little more light back into the shot.Equipment
This was a handheld shot with a Nikon D3200 with an 18-55mm lens.Inspiration
Initially my camera was with me to capture the farewell cookout I was having with a group of friends. As the sun started to set it was creating an amazing range of hues, that were all bouncing back up off the lake. Off on one side of the shore was a group of kayakers, on the other a group of cliff jumpers, and then dead center this amazing husky/human duo paddle boarding their way back inland. Paddle boarding takes a great amount of balance and muscle, but then adding extra movement and weight it was quiet impressive to witness. They really had to have a lot of faith in each other or they'd fall right in.Editing
There was minimal post-processing. Just a simple tweak to the white-balance, and levels. I wanted to ensure the subjects were only in silhouette. In my camera bag
The bag is a key piece for me. Its waterproof and insulated, with tons of pockets and clips that enables me to take the most difficult hikes in the worst possible weather. The contents always includes: Nikon D3200 body, Nikon 18-55mm lens, Nikon 55-200mm lens, a couple lens hoods, remote shutter release, a large and small tripod, Vivitar lens filters, extra battery, lens cleaner, and a first aid kit.Feedback
The Upper Peninsula of Michigan holds so many wonders: waterfalls, cliffs, endless forests, all rested on Lake Superior. I lived there for years and still never captured everything I wanted to. My advice is to take a day, pick a group of places on the map and just go. You will get something worthwhile at every location. In this case, just plop yourself down on the lake and wait for the sun to set, anything is possible if you stay long enough.
