Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in my living room.

Time

It was mid-afternoon-around 2 o'clock-and extremely rainy. I remember I was just itching to go shoot something, but all that was outside were dead trees, dead grass, rain, and gray clouds. I'm sure I could've found something to shoot, but not something necessarily share worthy. Anyway, since I wasn't exactly in the mood to go traipsing through the mud, I decided to practice taking portrait shots of my younger sisters in natural light since that's something I've always kind of struggled with (at least indoors) as a photographer. Well, as we were getting ready to take some test shots, I remembered that I hadn't taken any macro shots of peoples eyes with my new camera, yet. I've always had this thing about taking pictures of people's eyes just because they're so expressive and beautiful. So, I asked my sister to if it was okay to take a picture of her eyes and when she gave me the okay, I did just that. I'm really happy with how the picture turned out.

Lighting

When I took this shot, I made sure I was in a room with bright light, and in this case it was my living room. In this particular photo, my sister was standing sideways next one of the windows, so her left eye had a lot of reflection going on and was extremely bright, while her right one had only a little reflection and was lite pretty evenly. I was also shooting hand held since my tripod decided to stop working which meant I needed to boost my ISO to compensate. Besides that, all I needed to do was adjust my aperture here and there until I was satisfied the picture.

Equipment

I shot this photo with a Nikon D3200 with an 18-55mm lens attached with a 0.43X 52mm Macro lens.

Inspiration

I've always had a fascination with eyes just because they're so expressive and beautiful, so when I realized that I hadn't taken any close-up pictures of eyes with my new camera, I knew I had too. So I asked my sister if I could practice taking pictures of her eyes just to see how they would turn out.

Editing

Yes, I did, but not a lot. I think the only post-processing I did was brightening her eyes and making the skin around her eyes just a bit more smooth. Other than that, the rest is from the camera.

In my camera bag

It depends on what I'm shooting, but most of the time I have my Nikon D3200 with my 18-55mm lens, my 70-300mm telephoto lens, and some filters (ND, CPL, & FLD).

Feedback

I would say make sure you have plenty of light and a steady hand if you're not using a tripod (but I recommend using one if you have it). Also, let the model (or whoever you're shooting) rest their eyes between shots because if you use a macro lens like I did, you're going to be pretty close to their face and their eyes can only focus on the camera for so long before they start to hurt and get tired.
