Behind The Lens
Location
This was taken on location at the boat grave yard in Gloustershire on the banks of the river Severn. It's an area where to protect the banks of the River they ran scrap ships a ground to stop erosion.Time
This was taken in the morning and was part of a group shoot on location. Although it was May there was freezing wind blowing of the water but our Model Holly (aka Ivory Flame) never flinched.Lighting
Because it was a fairly bright but greyish day no extra lighting or reflector was used for this shot and exposure was taken using the built in camera exposure meter, whilst shooting in Aperture priority.Equipment
The camera used by me is a Nikon D600 with an 85mm prime lens with aperture at 5.6, shutter was 1/50th sec and ISO 200. it was hand held but although there was a risk of camera shake that didn't happen.Inspiration
Holly as a model has a pre-raphaelite look about her when posing and with the vintage looking outfit she was wearing it felt right to photograph it as if it were a painting.Editing
Shooting in Raw and processing in Photoshop CS6 the first job was to adjust exposure, contrast, and basic adjustments that Raw sometimes requires. The next step was to de-saturate the colours as the natural progression seemed to be to create a painting effect as if done in Pastel colours. The Texture of the old timbers was sharpened marginally. In the top right corner the grey sky seemed out of place and so a layer with fibres was added and masked and softened where required to take away the greyness and again perhaps add to the artistic effect.In my camera bag
My camera bag normally consists of the D600 with a 24-70 zoom, 50mm prime, 85mm prime and 70-300mm zoom. Alongside that I carry a speedlite 900 and also ND filters and ND graduated filters. Spare batteries and exposure meter also travel with me.Feedback
Shooting locations with models in the UK is always dependant on the weather and so it always advisable to have an alternative idea as some models will work regardless of the weather conditions whilst others may not want to be out in the cold, wind and rain.
