Behind The Lens

Location

In this piece I have 2 different photos. The ground level photo was taken in the South End of Boston. The sky level of this photo was taken on top of the Empire State Building in New York City. This piece really revolutionized my own photography and pushed me to make my work the best that it can be.

Time

The bottom section of the photo was taken in Boston around 6PM when traffic was busy. The top photo was taken on a very rainy day in New York. I actually had to keep wiping the water off my lens to get a good clean shot. Another funny thing is that I had my camera over the edge of the Empire State Building, no tripod, just my hands. Luckily I had a good grip and didn't drop it!

Lighting

I wanted this photo to have an industrial feel to it. I wanted color in the bottom to look sleek and clean but also have some fog. And in the top I had it looking all gray and gloomy since there was no sunlight to compliment the roof tops of the city.

Equipment

Bottom section was shot with a Canon 60D with a Canon 50mm f1.8 lens. The top section was taken also with a Canon 60D but with a Rokinon f3.8 Ultra Wide Angle lens. No other equipment was used.

Inspiration

Both of these photos were taken just doing what I love to do, and that is walking around adventuring through the city. When editing this photo I remembered some very abstract city photos that I saw on Instagram and thought to myself "I want people to see this and just be like 'How?!'" So I got my creative juices flowing and this is what came out.

Editing

I shot both of these photos in RAW format so I had to do some photo color correction to get both of the photos to compliment each other and really blend together. After that I deleted the sky in the Boston photo and pasted in the New York photo. I then added some fog and cleaned up my selections.

In my camera bag

My Canon 60D, a handheld camera stabilizer, a Canon 50mm f1.8 lens, Rokinon f3.8 Ultra Wide Angle lens, my newest addition which is a Canon 24-105mm f4 lens, 2 16gb SD Cards, 1 64gb SD Card, a LED light, and 2 extra camera batteries. This all manages to fit in my north face backpack that I bring everywhere.

Feedback

Go out and explore! The city is always an inspiring place to be. Just the energy of it is enough to bring out your creativity. No matter where you are in the city there is always something interesting to capture. If you have a vision then go capture that vision!
