Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in Coral Gables, Florida which is a suburb in Miami.

Time

I took the photo around 5pm-6pm during golden hour.

Lighting

The lighting is all natural, but I used Lightroom and Photoshop to enhance the natural light present in the photo. Achieving a look of illumination from within was a big part of these portraits.

Equipment

I used my Nikon D7000 to take both images that I blended together.

Inspiration

I took this photo as part of my "Portraits in Nature" series from 2015. I was inspired by the interaction between humans and the nature that surrounds them. I photographed a bunch of my friends along with plants, animals, and natural textures I found beautiful in Florida and New Jersey. I blended photos together to see how the portraits interacted with the organic textures. I wanted the photos to appear as if they were being illuminated from inside the portrait. Editing

Yes! This series was born in post-processing. I did simple edits to the photos in Adobe Lightroom first. Then I brought them into Photoshop and using layers, masks, and some of the Nik Collection software, I overlaid the photos and blended them until I achieved my desired look.

In my camera bag

I normally just carry my Nikon D7000 with my 35mm 1.8 lens and my Pentax K1000 if I want to shoot any film. I'm not big on carrying a ton of equipment with me everywhere.

Feedback

It takes patience! The photos in this series all took me around 4-5 hours to complete, minimum. Sometimes I'd spend 10 or more hours in Photoshop on each photo playing with masks, brushes, layers, and more. Some of the files were over 2 GB.
