Behind The Lens

Location

Benmore Garden's, near Dunoon, Argyll, Scotland

Time

11am.

Lighting

natural sunlight

Equipment

nothing fancy :) sony dsc300h bridge camera.

Inspiration

The himalyan blue poppy is my favourite flower :) love the vibrant blue colour of its delicate petals.

Editing

a little post proccessing, changed the colour balance very slightly +3 towards yellow in lightroom.

In my camera bag

i used to only carry spare batteries, however times have changed. I now carry a set of graduated filters and coloured filters for b&w. Alongside polariser, nd filter alongside a reasonably sturdy tripod, spare batteries, small bright led torch, sometimes i borrow a friends external flash. Always have a compass in my gear too alongside a red torch for nighttime shots as i frequently pop out to try to capture the northern lights. The red light has less of an impact to nightvision and use the compass to check where north is as if i'm at a location not used to can easily lose bearings..

Feedback

in scotland the best time to capture the himalyan poppies is towards the end of may until late june. if growing your own plants ensure to try to keep them out of direct sunlight for extended periods of time. they seem to love shadows and can suffer heat stroke. Don't allow them to flower for the first year either. Its advantageous to have some water droplets on its petals as well.
