Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in January of 2014 at 4pm at Battery Spencer in Sausalito, California overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge. This is one of the images that really that inspired me to keep shooting and look into DSLR cameras.

Time

I remember going to San Francisco for a conference and my sister in-law, who lives in San Jose took me to this unique and breath taking spot. All I had with me was my iPhone 4S. Despite not knowing much about photography at the time I knew this would be a great shot. This was taken at 4pm on this beautiful sunny January afternoon.

Lighting

I consider myself a natural light photographer, but the lighting was perfect this day and very few clouds.

Equipment

I used an iPhone 4S and no other equipment. Now I use a Nikon 5500, which I now wish I had on this day.

Inspiration

I have always loved traveling. From a young age my father, who was also an avid amateur photographer, took us to many US National Parks. I have been to San Francisco many times, but I am always looking for that unique location. Fortunately having family that are locals truly helps to be able to find the perfect elusive spots. I wanted to capture the essence and beauty of the bridge but also showcase dimension here.

Editing

No post-processing used for this photo. I try to limit post processing as much as I can but on occasion I will use lightroom or photoshop.

In my camera bag

I enjoy landscape and travel photography the most. Besides my DSLR Nikon I carry Lee graduated filters, my Manfrotto Befree Travel Tripod, and a Nikkor Zoom lens.

Feedback

A little lady luck on your side goes along ways in capturing a great picture. I would recommend waiting until later in the day to capture this same image as some mornings on the Golden Gate Bridge can be quite foggy. It all depends on the mood you are aiming for and waiting for sunset at this location could also provide some very beautiful shots as well.
