Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken few years ago in my home kitchen. I am self taught Estonian artist, who has been photography enthusiast for 5 years now. Its a huge passion and a way to escape the reality and share my perspective of the world with others.

Time

I remember it was one of those rainy mornings when you just don´t want to go outside. I was thinking of how fragile can life be. We're here one minute and then we're gone the next. We know deep down that life is short and sometimes its even shorter for some. Life is just that unpredictable.

Lighting

I had my kitchen window opened. The weather outside was awful it was pouring down and very dark because of the clouds. It made the whole atmosphere very miserable and lonely. Every time the wind blew I felt chills allover my body and because of the curtains the natural lightning changed its position often. But somehow the wind was so refreshing and pleasing.

Equipment

This photo was taken with my very first camera Nikon D5200 and I used my Nikon kit lens 18-55mm. Because of my high school studies it was difficult for me to save money for a better equipment. Photography is quite expensive hobby, but you don´t always need a fancy equipment to take great photos.

Inspiration

I have always thought I would never get the chance to share the story behind this photo. It has a very powerful and emotional background for my grandmother. When she was a teenager, her father used to work at a local farm. He was very hardworking and kindhearted. Always giving his maximum so their family would have a better life. He was usually driving with a harvester at work. The fields in that area were quite rough with its ups and downs. You had to be very cautious, because otherwise the machines could roll down the hill. Sadly, this was the way how my great granddad was taken from us. These pieces of broken glass are the very last memory of him. My grandmother picked them up from the accident scene and has been keeping them in a special box since. It was her way to handle with the pain. I know how much she is still missing him. The ones we love are never gone, they live within our hearts forever. This is why I came up with this idea. There are many hearts out there missing somebody.

Editing

Since the weather made me feel very emotional and thoughtful I was in a mood to shoot black and white photos. Nikon has a great color selection tool so I was able to achieve my vision without any post-processing. The red heart with a text saying ´I miss you´ is the main subject of this photo. This is why the heart is red and the background is gray. I think it makes the heart pop out more.

In my camera bag

I am still using my Nikon D5200. Its a very good amateur camera. Great to start off and practice. So far I have only two cheap lenses in my bag. The Nikon kit lens 18-55mm and Tamron 70-300mm.

Feedback

Its really easy to capture something similar, because it can be done almost everywhere. You just have to build up the scenery. You can also use color selection tool, if possible or you can do the editing later in post-processing, to give it a deeper look.
