Behind The Lens

Location

This photograph was taken in my backyard just outside of Little Rock, Arkansas. It was a morning following a night of freezing rain and a moderate snowfall.

Time

It was about 8:00 am and we had no power. What else would a photography hobbiest do?

Lighting

I'd taken my black Labrador retriever, Jake, out to play in the snow. As he was doing a great snowplow routine I looked up and this shot found me. The lighting was perfect and that's pretty rare.

Equipment

I actually had been playing with my new IPad so that was what I used, but soon after my first 200 shots I bought my first DSLR.

Inspiration

The stunning contrast between icy white covered branches and the deep blue sky. Also being from Arizona the ice storm was new and exciting.

Editing

Minimal processing was needed to attempt to recreate what I had seen, and all I had to work with was Snapseed. It is a great app for beginners and let's you see a small sampling of what a true post-processing software package can do. Of course now I would be able to adjust my camera settings to better capture my shot, but then this was my gateway into photography.

In my camera bag

It's my first love, a Sony a6000 camera with the stock Sony 16-50 lens. I also carry a Sony 55-200 telephoto lens, and my light weight tripod is never left behind.

Feedback

Work with your current equipment until it becomes a part of you. Once you know the equipment you'll be able to really focus on the shot...framing, balance, light, etc. That's when photography really become enjoyable for me.
