Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo down at Point Cartwright on the Sunshine Coast - this area is commonly known as Dolphin Rock. It is such a dynamic area where you can get a good shot at any time of the day!

Time

This was taken on a December afternoon last year. It was a spur of the moment trip down to the beach in the summer afternoon which is one of my favourite things to do.

Lighting

I walked around for about an hour waiting for the light to fade enough that I could get a lengthened exposure time (although only 1/2 sec) without a filter. It's a great location because the sun sets behind the hill which allows a variety of different shots to be taken

Equipment

This was taken on my dad's Pentax K-M which I loaned while I was learning. I simply used a tripod and waited out until the light was right.

Inspiration

I used to go down to this location often and it is a budding location for local photographers. I often saw amazing images of this rock captured, especially at sunrise, but I wanted to try something different. It worked so well because of the way the setting sun played with and reflected off the summer storm clouds.

Editing

If you can believe it, this image isn't overly processed! Because at the time I was just learning, I used a basic editing program that altered exposure and colour but I still think it turned out really well.

In my camera bag

I'm always prepared with my camera and fully charged battery, and plenty of insect repellent

Feedback

Time, and patience. Even if you get to your destination too early, take some stills of different areas and see which ones might produce quality images with exposure as the light continues to fade. Also, never don't go back to the same destination - the weather can play such difference in the images captured and can create something truly special.
