Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on the moors of Devon, England. It was late morning as I recall, and exceptionally windy.

Time

As I said, it was around noon. It wasn't the clearest of days, there were some heavy clouds rolling through.

Lighting

I waited until the sunlight made its way through the clouds to create the highlights on the left hand side of the horse. I like the drama in contrast.

Equipment

Canon 60D, 300mm lens.

Inspiration

I was travelling around, sleeping in the car looking for opportunities to take images of the natural landscape and wildlife we have here in England. Something I don't have the opportunity to do enough. After a long night in the cold and the rain in the exposed moorlands, I saw three horses half way up a hill and decided to get closer. They were weathered but I could sense their calm nature and approached them with cation, without fear. This stag came to me as I stood still for around half an hour in the cold. I waited for the opportunity to portray this moment of respect for one free animal to another.

Editing

A little. The sky was blown out so I lowered the exposure in Photoshop, along with the contrast and then darkened the blacks before converting the image to black and white.

In my camera bag

As many SD cards as I can find!

Feedback

Get outside and don't be afraid to climb mountains and get your hands dirty to get the shot you want. Take note of the lighting and use it to compose your image. Think about what you want in your frame, and what you don't need to show before you click!
