Behind The Lens

Location

The photo is taken at a danish beach in northern Denmark, The beach is know for that the local fishermen drags their fishing boats onto the beach at night, as there are no harbour nearby. Went there to shoot the boats, but this turned out the best picture as the sun was setting down the shore line

Time

It was taken just prior to sunset on a cold spring day. We had been shooting all day throughtout the northern coastline of Denmark, and was just about to go home when i took this picture

Lighting

The sunset was really colorfull and wanted to get a sense of motion in the clouds and see as it was a windy day. Therefore i pulled out my 10 stop ND filter, which dragged the clouds and smoothened the sea.

Equipment

A canon 6d with a 17-40mm F4 L lens, and a 10 stop Hoya ND filter. Due to the long exposure time i used a tripod, Mefoto globetrotter to be specific

Inspiration

The inspiration came from the wind dragging the cloud rapidly through the landscape. I've always had a soft spot for long exposures and love using ND filters, so as the sun was quickly setting i decided to go close to the shoreline and take the shot.

Editing

There have been done adjustments in lightroom, such as minor exposure, contrast and white balance (color casting from ND filter). I've also done sharpening and noise reduction in photoshop, and then minor burning and dodging to get some depth and contrast

In my camera bag

I normally carry: -Canon 6D -Canon 70-200mm F4 L -Canon 17-40mm F4 L -Hoya ND1000 (10 stop) filter -A canon EOS m3 with the kit lens (and a EF adapter). -Spare batteries -Tripod Mefoto globetrotter -Cable release and remote release -Zeiss cleaning wipes -Cloth for cleaning lenses -A brush for getting sand or likewise of lenses and equipment -Spare SD Cards

Feedback

Get a 10 stop ND filter. It is one of the funniest things to use in my opnion, it can take a boring landscape and turin it into a really nice photograph that drags you in. Anything with movement goes and it lets you play with time. Especially nice around costal areas and whenever there is high wind.
