With all the respect in the world, this is an amazing photograph. But the tag totally destroys it for me. Imagine a tag next to Mona Lisa. Beautiful images sabotaged. Why distract?

Behind The Lens

Location
This photo was taken on the street right outside my house. It was a rare occasion where there were no cars parked on the street so I grabbed my son and our big rainbow umbrella and headed out! I sat down on the ground and shot low. I wanted to be sure that I got the sky more then the trees.
Time
This was taken at about 10am. Normally that wouldn't be a great time to photograph someone on my street but it had just stopped raining and it was heavily overcast. The clouds diffused the light so much that the ambient lighting was nice and flat.
Lighting
Since it had just finished raining the clouds diffused the light so much that the ambient lighting was nice and flat. I only use natural light only in this picture but I tried to keep the dark heavy feeling in the light in post production. I didn't want to change it so much that I lost that.
Equipment
This was shot with a Canon 5d mark iii and a Canon 70-200 f/2.8 is ii. Since I photograph children most of the time I like to work with minimal equipment in order to stay light and mobile. It easier to keep up with them that way!
Inspiration
I found the beautiful rainbow umbrella while I was shopping in the grocery store a few days before I shot this image. As soon as I saw it I knew I had to get it and do something with it! Luckily a few days later it rain, there were no cars on my street and my son was home from school. It seemed like everything lined up perfectly to capture this moment.
Editing
This image in a composite created in photoshop using pictures I'd taken at different times. I had been photographing ducks in the street the day before and I composited the duck in to the image of my son. The sky was cloudy and dark in the original picture but I wanted an even more dark and heavy looking clouds so I added them. The post processing of this image was done entirely in Photoshop.
In my camera bag
I keep my Canon 5d mark iii body, Canon 50mm 1.4, Canon 24-70mm 2.8 ii, and Canon 70-200mm 2.8 ii. Those lens give me the variety I need to get most of the shots I'm after. I also keep my Canon 580 ex ii and 430 ex iii speedlights and Yongnuo flash triggers and transceiver in my bag most of the time. I'm usually moving too fast chasing little subject to use speedlights but I want with me just in case! I also keep a small stuffed bunny that I call Sir Hopsalot, bubbles and small non-perishable candies in my bag to help win over shy little ones and get the attention of distracted kids! That's stuff is as essential as the camera for a children and family photographer!
Feedback
When you're photographing children, particularly young children, be patient and shoot a lot. You need to plan the shoot but you also need to stay flexible. Kids come to the shoot with their own agenda and it may not be what you had in mind. Sometimes it takes creative thinking to get them to go along with your plan instead! You never know what you are going to get when photographing a child but whatever it is it will be genuine!
