Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken at the back gate around the corner of my house in Woking, Surrey, United Kingdom.

Time

The photo was taken at 14:00. I was going for a walk beside the Basingstoke canal to take a few pictures. I took this picture on my way back home. It was just pure luck. I was in the right place at the right time.

Lighting

The lighting from the sun was behind the subject at the perfect angle.

Equipment

The picture was taken on the Sony Alpha 77 with the Sony 50mm f/1.4 Carl Zeiss Planar at F1.4, ISO 100 in Aperture priority mode.

Inspiration

I love taking pictures of animals. The cat was following me until it climbed through the fence and decided to turn back to look at me. I immediately knew that it will make a perfect picture and luckily my camera was ready to take the shot.

Editing

I did not have to carry out much post processing on the image because you get very sharp images from the Sony 50 mm Sony 50mm f/1.4 Carl Zeiss Planar lens. I do all my editing inn Adobe Lightroom. I first adjusted the white/black by referencing the histogram to ensure no colours were clipped in the images. This is always the first adjustment I make on every image I edit. A small adjustment was then made of approximately +5 on the shadows slider. I adjust the clarity by +20 and the vibrance by +5. Lens corrections (Profile and chromatic aberration) were then applied. Finally, I applied a camera calibration by using a custom profile created with the Colorchecker passport and accompanying Lightroom plugin.

In my camera bag

Sony Alpha 77II Metz 64 AF1 flash. Sigma 12-24mm f/4.5-5.6 DG II HSM Lens Sony 24-70 F2.8 CZ lens. Sony 70-300 f/4.5-5.6 G SSM Sony 50mm f/1.4 Carl Zeiss Planar Lee 100mm system filter holder. Lee adaptor rings for each of my lenses. Lee 0.6 ND (Hard & Soft Grad filter) Lee 0.9 ND (Hard & Soft Grad filter) Lee Coral 3 ND filter. Lee 105mm landscape polariser. Lee 81B warming filter.

Feedback

This shot was just pure luck. I was in the right place at the right time. My advice will be to always look for photo opportunities as they can arise when lease expected. Before taking a shot always think about where you light is coming from and how it falls on your subject. Sometimes adjusting you shooting position by even a small amount can make a big difference on the final image you produced. Investing in at least one high quality professional lens if you can afford it can make a big difference to your final shot.
