Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in my studio. It's on the small side of what I would like, but big enough locations are hard to come by for a fair price.

Time

I take most of my portraits after 8PM, since my kids have to be put to bed

Lighting

To create a separation between the model and the backdrop, I angeled the light more than what seems needed and snooted it to have the model stand out from the shadowy backdrop

Equipment

This was taken with a 24-70 f/4 on a Nikon D750. My studio lights are Elinchrom

Inspiration

The gorgeous model and I threw some ideas back and fourth, and the Steampunk theme we ended up with was entirely her idea. I wanted the character "cotton candy" to stand out as a strong and tough lady.

Editing

On this photo I did some heavy color mapping and slight skin retouching. The model Ingrid har near perfect skin, but I wanted a cartoony finish. Several sets of D&B was needed to get the desired finish.

In my camera bag

I'm a Leica shooter so my m240 is always with me. If I'm in studio I usually just use a 50mm and a 90mm.

Feedback

Make sure the model is in on what the theme and emotion of the pic is. The more you are in sync, the better the poses and expressions you'll be able to photograph. Try to visualize how the picture will look when edited and what pitfall you want to avoid. For example if you need to fix hair, try to do in on the model... Not the computer. Being able to concentrate on the bigger image is always a better way to work.
