Behind The Lens

Location

I took this at a park near my apartment in the city of Taichung, Taiwan. It's a park that I like to walk through a lot, and it's been a bit of an inspiration for some of my nature photography.

Time

The photo was taken in the afternoon, though it doesn't necessarily look it. It's a bit eerie, seeing something look so quiet in the middle of a bustling city day.

Lighting

Taichung is always a bit smoggy, and this day was not an exception. The sun was put through a filter of clouds and smog, naturally creating a more even lighting.

Equipment

I only used my Canon Rebel T3i. The majority of my photography is done on-the-go without standard equipment, like a tripod.

Inspiration

This park is an area of green in the urban jungle of Taichung. It's a place where the air usually feels a little fresher, greener. Seeing it become smoggy, in addition to the natural tunnel of the trees, created a slightly darker undertone that I couldn't miss.

Editing

I reduced the colors and enhance the smog a bit to try to really capture what I saw that day.

In my camera bag

I usually only carry a camera around, in addition to an extra memory card and two extra battery packs. It's important to keep the extra batteries especially because you don't want to hurry and fumble a shot due to a low battery.

Feedback

Find something that inspires you and look for a way to give it a somewhat spooky theme. Turning something innocent and green into something more menacing puts an interesting spin on the viewer's perspective of the subject.
