This photo was taken in my friend's home in Independence, KY. It took a few visits for Bear to warm up to you, but once he does he's a gentle soul.Time
This was taken in the late hours of the morning.Lighting
You can see that the sunlight was still coming in fairly intensely through the living room window, most likely around 11:00 AM. I really love how the light just bathes over Bear's back.Equipment
This was taken on a Nikon D7100. The lens was the 18-55mm kit lens. No flash or tripod, just me lying on the floor in front of Bear.Inspiration
I was actually at my friends house to shoot a few casual engagement pictures for them with and without their dogs. While the bride-to-be was finishing getting ready I took the opportunity to snap a few shots of their pups enjoying a lazy Saturday morning.Editing
I always try to edit realistically. Because the couch in the background is the same color as Bear, I really tried to go for a black & white "feel," but more of an actual brown & white. I toggled back and forth between color and black and white, but they were so similar that I realized I enjoyed the "brown & white" a lot more.In my camera bag
Nikon D750, Nikon D7100, 24-120mm, 70-200mm VR II, 50mm, 35mm, 10-24mm. Nikon speedlight.Feedback
As you can see, lighting played a HUGE part in this photo. Your eye comes into play as well for composition. I purposefully laid on the ground so that Bear would almost blend in with the couch with the light sort of "tracing" his profile. I knew that with so much brown in the composition and the beige carpet, I would be able to go for a black and white feel, but remain in full color and use the natural contrast in my favor. A fun little experiment! But, overall I would say that lighting is the absolute most important thing, and being able to recognize your opportunities!
