About 70 miles off the coast of Los Angeles, California lies the Channel Islands. Now protected as part of the National Park system, this lush ecosystem was nearly wiped out by overgrazing sheep introduced in the 1850s. Their numbers flourished without any type of large predators and despite tens of thousands being shipped to the mainland. Between 1939 and 1980, about 260,000 sheep were either transported or shot. It wasn't until the early 2000s that the last remaining sheep were removed completely from the island.
