This photo was taken in Rome, just at the beginning of "Via della Conciliazione".Time
I saw the sun, just upside Saint Peter, it was around 6pm. I saw this guide line direct to S. Peter, the light, the contrast, I thougt it could be a great black & white shot, and it was!. I took this photo in August 2006, with my first and actual Canon digital camera, and love it!Lighting
What was particular to me at the moment of the shot was the contrast, the sun just up of the church and ideally at the end of the guideline of the street, like a road to the sun, a road to the church, a road to God. A lot of symbolich meaning.Equipment
I used my Canon EOS 30D, with a Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM. The shot was taken at 22mm, f/7.1, 1/320, ISO 100, . No flash, no tripod!Inspiration
When I was in place, I suddently thought that the position and the situation could lead me to take a great shot. There was a lot of the typical conditions we can read in the manuals, so I tried to apply all of them in this shot. I considered the shot as a trial, a technical exercise but I was also hoping to be able to take the maximum from that situation. I was also a bit lucky: I didn't try many shots: it was the only one I took!Editing
I did a bit of post-processing in Lightroom, nothing special, just increased a little bit the contrast (it was already strong thanks to the sun just opposite to me) and increased a little bit the clearance and definition. In my camera bag
Normally I take with me just one body, Canon EOS 30D, which will be soon replaced by the new Canon EOS 5D Marck IV, with 2 zoom lenses, a Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L USM and a Canon 70-200 f/2.8L USM. I just sold the 10-22 which I used to take this picture to make room for the new Canon 16-35 f/2.8L III.Feedback
If you want to take a similar picture, you have to visit Italy and Rome, before all! Joking! This shot was taken in August, in a full sunny day, at the end of it, but when the sun was not so strong to burn the lightest areas of the image. I took the sun just out of the frame, to avoid chromatic aberration and flares. Than I shot to get the maximum deep of field to have all the layers in focus. The guideline was very import for the final composition, because it brings your eyes direct to main subject, which is the minor part of the frame, but appears immediatly as the main subject of the photo.
