Behind The Lens

Location

My husband and I live on a small farm. This photo was taken of one of our llamas, Bladerunner who was quite a character. This is one of those once in a life time photos for me.

Time

Taken in the late afternoon. Was out visiting the herd and taking some shots of them being the crazy fuzzy critters they were. My nickname for the boys was "The Stupids" as I could never anticipate what they were going to do next.

Lighting

Late afternoon sunshine, to the right of the camera.

Equipment

Nikon D50 with standard lens. I was a newbie to photography and had no idea what I was doing at the time I took the photo. Beginner's luck. All settings were on auto.

Inspiration

I enjoy taking nature and animal shots. I don't recall much inspiration, just a determination to get to know my first DSLR camera. Bladerunner was particularly nosey that afternoon, getting up close and personal which didn't happen often.

Editing

I have been an avid fan of PaintShop Pro since version 9 came out years ago. I resized the photo and did a little photo manipulation with the bottom lip by dragging it downward a bit for an extra big and cheesy smile, then sharpened the image, and voila!

In my camera bag

Currently I am using a Nikon D7100 with standard lens, lens cloth, tons of storage cards, a charger and my wifi connection. I have several other lens but switch them out of the bag depending on where I am going and what types of photos I plan on shooting. I cannot carry a heavy bag so I plan carefully before heading out.

Feedback

When photographing outdoors, take of lots of shots from various angles and heights. With animals I try to take the non-typical shots, ie., eyes, nostrils, feet, tails with a little bit of the natural surroundings. Zoom in and out on the same shot for a wider variety of interesting photos. I try to tell a story with my photography. Try to imagine what kind of story line you could use with the subject you are shooting and ask yourself questions like, "do I want to be funny, sarcastic, serious, creative, natural." Then look for those types of scenes or scenarios. Happy shooting!
