I took this one on Hornsea beach it was the first time we had taken our Jack Russell Jay, as you can see he took to it like a pro he wasn't even phased by the waves I got this and the following shots of him landing and being swamped then turning round and standing up to his chest in the North sea.Time
I was lucky with the light it was February and getting late in the afternoon the sun was dipping behind the cliffs it was just fortunate that when the dogs went in they were in the fading sunlightLighting
Early morning as the sun is rising and late afternoon/evening as the sun lowers is the best time for the softest light just be aware that beaches can have cliffs and they can block the sun when it is lower in the sky.Equipment
This was shot on canon eos 70D with Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM lens I love this lens as it is fairly portable and I don't need to use a tripod.Inspiration
I wanted to capture my dogs first visit to the beach, I was very lucky that he loved it and joined in the water play with the other dogs I had as much fun as he did and I got some good shots of the other dogs too.Editing
I don't do a lot of post processing apart from the raw conversion and an odd crop most of my photos are straight from camera. For RAW processing I use either Canons Digital Photo professional 4 or DXO Optics Pro 10 which I get on better with than adobe but that is personal preferenceIn my camera bag
First thing in the bag is my Canon 70D with Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM attached, it took a long time to find a bag that was suitable for me that would take the attached lens but Thinktanks City Walker10 does, I also carry my EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM, spare battery and memory cards are tucked away in there too along with a couple of lens cloths and my silver gloves, I have raynauds so have to keep my hands warm even in the summer, I have another bag that contains my EOS 600D and my EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM but that bag only goes out when I am going somewhere specific and I don't want to swap lenses while I am out. I do have a couple of tripods but they are basic and I don't use them very much.Feedback
Spend time with your dog they will get used to the camera I have been taking photo's of Jay since we brought him home so he is used to the camera and he doesnt poke his nose on the lens, always have your camera set for action once they start running you only get one chance. the same goes for Wildlife. Jay goes most places with me but he is most relaxed on the farm out in the fields. Always expect the unexpected we had no idea Jay would react like this too the Sea he used to hate getting wet but a skin condition meant he had to have baths twice a week so a toy in the bath helped overcome the hate of water and you can see the result just goes to prove anything can be accomplished even with dogs
