Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my backyard in the small little diamond town of Alexander Bay in the extreme Northern Cape of South Africa, right where the great Orange River and the sea meet. This is where I really started living when I moved here 2 years ago, away form "civilisation" and close to nature and simplicity.

Time

I was wondering around in the garden during the afternoon with my camera in hand as always, and spotted the dandelion from a distance. It immediately drew me like a magnet and I approached it with caution as to not disturb the delicate seeds. Got right down on my butt and started clicking away as if this little dandelion was the best model in a fashion show!

Lighting

I love taking my photographs with natural light. I do not even own an off camera flash or diffusers, so I totally rely on natural light for all my shots.

Equipment

This shot was taken with a Nikon D3200 with the 18-55mm kit lens, no flash and no other equipment. Taken free hand without a tripod.

Inspiration

When I saw this delicate dandelion with it's seeds being blown away, it inspired me to share the delicacy and beauty of this most natural event with others. We miss so much by not looking closer, not realising the wonders of the world around us and bypassing life every single day without noticing. I wanted to freeze this moment in time so others could see what I saw...

Editing

I very rarely do any post processing, and if I do, it would be mainly some contrast, saturation and colour temperature adjustments, and of course cropping where needed.

In my camera bag

As I am only starting out in photography, I always have my Nikon D3200 with me...always!! With no funds for good glass, I rely on my kit lenses, the aforementioned 18-55 mm and the 55-200 mm lenses. I have recently bought a second hand 18-105 mm as it was a good price, and am currently experimenting with it. Those are my only lenses, and most of my shots are taken with them. Some shots were taken before my DSLR acquisition a year or so ago, and they were taken with my little bridge camera, a Kodak Z812. Just can't get rid of it, since it started my journey with me and I am very nostalgic about it! These are the items in my camera bag, with the odd memory card and extra battery, of course! I do own a tripod, but I must admit I have never used it...lol

Feedback

Dandelions are amazing to photograph. Just like most things, they each have a different look and feel, and at different stages you can record the circle of life, and best of all, unless the wind interferes, you have a stationary subject and you can get really close without needing a tripod. You will mostly find me on my knees or on my butt between nature's wonders! A steady hand helps, so if you really have the shakes, a tripod might be a good idea for those sharp images. And the wonderful thing is, dandelions are EVERYWHERE! Just keep your eyes open and they will reveal themselves to you...happy hunting!
