Location
This photo was taken near the end of a shoot for a client at a park on the waters edge. (I'm a dog photographer).Time
This photo was taken under very variable light conditions in mid October.Lighting
The lighting was changing every few minutes - I'll have to be honest and say that this was just luck! Right place, right time.Equipment
This was shot with a Nikon D300 and Nikkor 85 mm 1.4 G lens.Inspiration
We had just finished a series of action shots and decided to take a break by the water. I caught a glimpse of Dexter as he was sitting so beautifully arranged in the grasses and clicked the shutter.Editing
Post processing of this image was minimal but did involve removing a lot of dandruff (just part of post processing black dogs!)! Otherwise, it was just a matter of playing with the white balance. In my camera bag
I now carry a Nikon D610, sometimes the D300, but always my favourite and "go to" lens a Nikkor 35mm 1.4G. Depending on what I'm out shooting, I may also have a Nikon 70-200 2.8 and/or a Tamron 15-30Feedback
Photographing dogs, or any animal, presents unique challenges. You never know what they will do.. I used to shoot in Aperture mode but with animals I'm now shooting Shutter priority at about 1/1000 Lots of time - it takes dogs about 30 min. until they're in a natural relaxed state. Get down to their level. Make friends later; it will avoid them running towards you and licking the lens. Patience. Endless patience.
