Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on my final visit to Keravel, our holiday home in Brittany, France which we sadly had to sell after 20 years of wonderful holidays. It is a view across the farmer's field next to the cottage.

Time

I had forgotten to draw the curtains and so I awoke early as the first light started appearing around 5am. I saw the beautiful colours from my window and grabbed the camera and tripod and ventured out into the crisp morning. This was my favorite image of the sunrise that morning.

Lighting

The natural light from the sunrise was incredible, but the sun was behind the forest and so the trees were silhouetted against the sky. I wanted to see the detail of the greens and browns in the trees and so I used a bracketed exposure and HDR toning to increase the dynamic range within the scene.

Equipment

This was shot on a Canon 6D with a Canon EF 17-40mm F4 L ultra-wide angle zoom lens, mounted on a tripod.

Inspiration

I have so many memories of this place, so many childhood holidays, and yet I knew I would not be going back. This inspired me to capture as much of the place as I possible could whilst I still had the chance.

Editing

I wanted to see the detail of the greens and browns in the trees without washing out the sky and so I used bracketed exposures and combined them into a HDR image using Photomatix Pro to increase the dynamic range. I then used a heavy vignette in Lightroom cc to add some depth to the scene.

In my camera bag

Besides my iphone, the only camera I own is the Canon 6D so it pretty much goes everywhere with me. I therefore have a few different kit options depending on the situation: For discreteness I pack the 6d with the 40mm 2.8 pancake into a soft Canon L lens pouch and simply stick it in my satchel. For most situations I pack the 6D with 35mm F2 IS and 430exII flashgun into a lowepro camera bag. For a full on camera geek out I pack a lowepro rucksack with the 6D, Canon 16-35mm F4 IS, Canon 24-105 F4 IS, Tamron 70-300 VC, Canon 35mm F2is, Canon 50mm F1.8 STM, Canon 85mm F1.8, 430exii flashgun, tripod and accessories!
