Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at a local music concert down in Steamboat in the summer of 2015 when I made a trip down to see my family. I'm fairly new at photography and everything was so hectic it was hard to even concentrate! I saw my niece standing in the middle of it all and I felt that if I was overwhelmed, then she must be just as overwhelmed as I was. As I looked though, it seemed more like she was the calm one and I had to take this picture because it helped me calm down as well.

Time

This shot was taken in the afternoon with the harsh sun beating down on all of us making it tricky to get the exposure correct, made even more difficult by my little nephews using me as a human jungle gym. It was a nice day despite the heat though, with all of the food vendors out and about. With this shot being taken on the 4th of July, there was barbeque everywhere and the smell of smoke permeated through the air all the way to the front stage of the venue.

Lighting

With this shot being taken during the afternoon with the sun directly overhead and with only intermittent cloud cover, I didn't want to take photos of people's faces necessarily, as I am not too fond of people squinting in photos. With my niece turned away from me, it granted me the perfect opportunity to get a shot that I would not have to worry about harsh lighting on the face.

Equipment

I used an old Pentax K1000 Asahi with a 50mm f/2 handheld with natural lighting

Inspiration

I was at the concert simply to see my family and was excited as I had not seen my brothers, nieces, or nephews in years and my older brother is bound for Germany soon with his wife, daughter, and son. This put more importance on spending time with them and trying to remember all that I could from this day. With this mindset, I set out to capture photos that I thought would portray my family as accurately as possible at that time while also trying to develop my style. I wanted the shot to be reminiscent of old family photos with kids playing in the front yard while a parent took a quick snap with their polaroid. It will be interesting to see how they have changed from this day to when I see them again.

Editing

I did not use any post-processing for this image as it was shot on film and developed by Richard Photo Lab who did a fantastic job with it already.

In my camera bag

For camera bodies I normally carry: Nikon D5100 & Nikon F100 For camera lenses I normally carry: Nikon 35mm f/1.8G (for digital), Nikon 50mm f/1.8G, Nikon 35mm f/2 D (for film) When I was shooting this event however, I carried a different camera kit. For camera body I carried: Pentax K1000 Asahi For camera lens I carried: SMC Pentax 50mm f/2

Feedback

For others trying to capture a similar look I would recommend scouting the area first by showing up before the show starts. In this particular area, there was a mountain over to the right and a parking lot over to the left. This obviously poses some interesting problems if you're trying to frame a photo without too many distractions. You just have to remember, you can tilt your camera into the vertical orientation to frame a shot the way you want to. If you're shooting film, I would recommend getting to know the film characteristics and camera controls as best as you can so that you know how to expose correctly and not end up with half of your photos underexposed (which I have done...).
