Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken in my small home studio. I was having a difficult session and the baby was sitting with its mum for a while. I wrapped a black piece of fabric around its little feet and grabbed a detail shot.

Time

Around lunch.

Lighting

This was shot in natural light. I normally use strobes but it was a grabbed shot between poses.

Equipment

Canon 6D, 24-70 lens, or 50mm

Inspiration

I know that these little feet will grow really fast. Babies don't stay tiny for long and its important to me to try and record as many of the special little details as I can of every baby for the parents.

Editing

I converted to b&w in lightroom and adjusted the contrast to where I wanted it. Then this image had to be taken into photoshop. Wrapping the feet in black fabric allowed me to isolate the feet from the background and I used a black layer with a layer mask to finish the background.

In my camera bag

I have my canon 6D, and three lenses. 24-70 is my go to lens, a 50mm prime and my 70-200 which I love for outdoor portraits - heavy but worth it. I also have a squeaky toy (a burger dog chew!!), a cookie monster lens buddy and a cat toy (feathers on a stick) - anything to get a child's attention. I have a couple of Yongnuo strobes which I pull out when needed.

Feedback

Baby toes wriggle, so high shutter speed. Make sure that the little feet are surrounded by black as this will make post processing a lot easier. Use a hand under the fabric to hold the legs together and keep the feet on one plane. Make sure your aperture is right. If the depth of field is too shallow then some toes can be too soft. This could have done with being a bit sharper :)
