This is a breed of mountain dog from the Serra de Estrela area of Portugal. They were - are used to guard sheep in the mountains.

A very placid natured dog and the phrase "gentle giant" is a perfect description.

The eyes are also very orange and deep, which this picture shows well.

The blue paint I added! It was non toxic chalk based paint!

This dog is a 5 year old male called "Cheese".

In fact Cheese is not used to guard sheep! He lives on an old cheese farm (now a museum) in the flat west coast area and is a 'pet'.

He does however live outdoors and true to his genetic background is often active at night time and has guarding instinct.

One of his favourite daytime activities is to stretch out on his back for long periods of time with his tongue hanging out.

A very aware and intelligent dog. He also watches planes crossing the sky and is very loyal but is a total individual.
