Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at 3rd beach in Vancouver, Canada

Time

Shoot started at 6pm and went till 8pm

Lighting

This photo was for media and promotion for a local, very innovative theatre company. I set my camera to tungsten white balance to make it look like blue hour even though it was still early and overcast. Actors were lit by the flashes in the umbrellas.

Equipment

I used my Nikon d7000 with Nikon sb700 and sb800 all wirelessly controlled by Pocketwizard control tl's.

Inspiration

Paid assignment.

Editing

Only used Lightroom to clean up noise and sharpen etc.

In my camera bag

Nikon d750 camera sb910 flash. 24-70mm 2.8, 50mm 1.8, 85mm 1.8. Pocketwizards and rogue gels.

Feedback

This is not one of the pics the client chose. I had added a main light and rim light to most of the photos, but after getting the shots I wanted and previsualized. I turned off the other flashes to get a more mysterious look. This ended up being my favourite. My advise is to plan thoroughly your shoot ahead of time, get the shots you imagine and when you've executed them, always try something a little more experimental, a new technique maybe. Many times those are the real keepers. Thomas Gould
