I rebuild antique cars and I have found it fascinating that forensics can play a major role in determining the history of a vehicle. The circumstance of finding this cracked nut on a major engine part that was supposed to have been completely overhauled says much about the then owner's choice of mechanic, perhaps his seriousness about the overhaul, or his ability to afford quality workmanship. The speculation can run rampant, until the entire car has been through a post mortem; after which a fairly clear picture of the the car's history and perhaps owner is discernable.
