This photo was taken not that far from where I lived in Darwin the capital of the Northern Territory Australia. I saw the storm front coming through and went for a walk to a local park to get a clearer shot.Time
It was just as the sun was setting and l saw that the light of the stadium had just come on, this added a bit more light to the shotLighting
Getting a good photo of lightning means getting the right amount of light in the photo whilst allowing the lightning strike to stand out, so it is not easy to get it right. In this shot the setting sun and the artificial light all played a partEquipment
I used a Cannon 60D with a Cannon lens on a tripod to achieve this shot. if I had my go again l would also use a trigger as it would stabilise the photo even moreInspiration
I love weather photos, and l think storms make the best type of weather photo, it is never a set up it is always unpredictable and you will never get the same photo more then once. Lightning photography is a art form that is difficult to master and harder to maintain.Editing
I did very little post-processing - if l remember correctly l used photo shop to sharpen the shot and very little colour processing. In my camera bag
I have a large camera bag but rarely take it out on a photography exploration trip. l normal take my current camera a wide angle and a small zoom lens. It all depends on what l am after, the majority of time l am just after holiday or happy snaps, point and shoot. if l find a subject that l am after to improve my skills l will take what l believe will suit the subject best. In the case of lightning l use two main lens, a wide angle for large storm that are close, or a small zoom 18-50 for the longer shots but maintaining the whole picture.Feedback
Storm chasing and lightning photography can be dangerous, so the best tip is do not let the storm get the better of you stay safe at all times. To take a realy great shot dont just open the shutter and hope for a lighting strike to appear, you will lose some of the other aspects of the photo the longer you keep the shutter open, and dont expect to improve the photo by using post production applications, such as stitching and layering. The best bet is to study the clouds and weather understand the conditions and take a lot of near miss's to get a better shot.
