The photograph was taken around 7pm in Alaska in November when the sunset is approximately 4PM.Lighting
The fire circle is created by stuffing steel wool into a metal whisk. The whisk has a cord attached to the end and once the steel wool is lit on fire the whisk is spun in a circle. The best effect is created when the circle is varied.Equipment

The Photography Club at the University of Alaska was doing a workshop shooting the aurora borealis. The sky was overcast so the alternative was to do fire circles.Editing

Winter is the best time as it get dark earlier and best after a snow fall or a heavy rain to prevent fires. The person doing the fire circle needs to wear clothing covering as much as possible of their body.
