Behind The Lens

Location

The photograph was taken at the Montana Creek Dog Mushing Associations mushing trails, near Willow, AK.

Time

The photograph was taken around 7pm in Alaska in November when the sunset is approximately 4PM.

Lighting

The fire circle is created by stuffing steel wool into a metal whisk. The whisk has a cord attached to the end and once the steel wool is lit on fire the whisk is spun in a circle. The best effect is created when the circle is varied.

Equipment

Camera and tripod with long shutter speed.

Inspiration

The Photography Club at the University of Alaska was doing a workshop shooting the aurora borealis. The sky was overcast so the alternative was to do fire circles.

Editing

The only post-processing is insuring the lighting is correct.

In my camera bag

Along with my Nikon D750 I have two Nissin Mark II Di866 flashes. I carry a Sirui carbon fiber travel tripod for when my Manfrotto tripod is to heavy to carry.

Feedback

Winter is the best time as it get dark earlier and best after a snow fall or a heavy rain to prevent fires. The person doing the fire circle needs to wear clothing covering as much as possible of their body.
