Behind The Lens

Location

Taken on a farm in the Great Karoo, South Africa,

Time

Around 9pm, the temperature was about 35 degrees C. The storm had been building all evening. Soon after this shot it became too dangerous to be outside. The orange glow to the right is a fire started by a previous strike.

Lighting

The lighting is what you get at night during a thunderstorm. Pitch darkness broken by flashes of lightning.

Equipment

Canon 40D with a 17-55mm and a tripod.

Inspiration

It was a crazy storm, and combined with the heat, it was a wild night! What else would a photographer do?

Editing

Very little processing except for a bit of contrast and exposure adjustment.

In my camera bag

One body, 70-200 zoom, 17-55 wide, 105mm macro, a speedlight, some spare cards and batteries, and an external hard drive.

Feedback

Take the trouble to do it! Too often I find myself being too chilled (lazy) to go to the trouble of setting up. If you look at something and think "fuck that would make an incredible shot", TAKE THE SHOT!
