A Steampunk convention in Seattle called SteamposiumTime
Sometime in the afternoon but it was taken inside the event space.Lighting
I used the lighting available to capture this shot.Equipment
I used Canon 5D Mark II and my Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 lensInspiration
I was doing media for a Steampunk convention in Seattle. There were brilliant costumes every way I turned. This man (Lord William Towers) makes his own steampunk costumes (www.facebook.com/steamtowers). This one was a fully functional steam powered backpack. I couldn't resist asking him to quickly pose for a shot and it turned out to be my favorites from this event.Editing
Yes, I do enjoy editing photos but I think it's important to not over do it. I love creating edgy high contrast images without loosing any tonality. I consider my images to have a sort of subtle HDR style to them. I don't actually use HDR for quick portraits like this one but I like the gritty feel and I'm always careful to have detail in my highlights and shadows. I believe I did a touch of poster edges on this image as well to bring out his character. In my camera bag
My go to is my Canon 5D Mark II and my Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 lens. I often shoot events and candid style shots. My style of shooting requires me to be efficient, versatile and able to work with whatever lighting already exists in a space.Feedback
My best advice for capturing photos of interesting people and costumes is to tour around to as many interesting events as you possibly can. This shot was taken as the man in the photo (Lord William Towers) was simply walking by. I quickly grabbed him and asked him to stand in the light against a wall with interesting lighting. I already had all my settings ready before I even saw him coming so I was able to snap a quick shot and let him go his way. I suppose the famous quote 'f/8 And Be There' really does sum it up. It's all about putting yourself in the right situations. If you like this photo feel free to browse my collection at www.marymathesonphotography.com
