Behind The Lens

Location

This shot was taken in the Dandenong Ranges, which has beautiful rainforests, and is only an hours drive from Melbourne, in Australia. I had this vision for a shoot of a young family walking down the beautiful natural pathways, but was in for a real treat with little Ally and Eliza, dancing their way through the afternoon.

Time

This was one of my favorites shots from the day, with the light mottled through the treetops in just a way that gave off a whimsical feel to this particular moment. It was 4 o'clock in the afternoon, and the middle of summer, so it was nice and cool in the shadows of the trees, which is a must when small children are involved!

Lighting

I chose this location partly because I knew the sun would be high in the sky at that time of day. The shelter of the rain forest provided quite a few 'golden' opportunities with light.

Equipment

Canon 5D MK3 24-70mm Natural light.

Inspiration

I am a big fan of Kirsty Mitchell and her project on The Wonderland Book. Obviously this is on such an extravagant scale compared to mine, but I just love all things nature and all things girly! As an emerging photographer, I am so inspired by the creativity artists like Kirsty show, so getting out into nature to practice what I've learned is just the start. I hope to follow these two girls throughout their childhood and into their tweens and teen years to take more pics of them here.

Editing

I have used some LR presets for pulling back highlights, but aside from that, just a bit of background blur for a bokeh effect and some dodge and burn techniques that I'm currently exploring.

In my camera bag

Canon 5D MK3 Canon 60D for back up 24-70mm f/2.8 85mm f/1.4 50mm f/1.8 Neutral density filter Polarising filter Manfrotto tripod for long exposures.... A collapsable reflector.

Feedback

If you're shooting younger subjects out in nature like that you really need to remember how fragile they are.... I was most embarrassed photographing a family one day, when I stood an 8 year old girl on top of an ants nest! Aside from my kit, and whatever props I want to work with, I always take suncream, towels, baby wipes, cold drinks and easy snacks. A plastic hairbrush is always a good addition too!
