Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my living room.

Time

It was around 2:00 p.m. on a rainy day, I wanted to try a new lighting set up.

Lighting

I needed a little extra light to light the dog, so I used my table lamp (very fancy I know) but it work great, I just laid it on the floor and tilted the lamp shade to create a catch light in his sweet eyes.

Equipment

This was taken with my Nikon D3X, 50mm (1.4) lens 1/60 sec, f11 ISO 250, hand held. 1 Profoto B1 light with a beauty dish on it and my extra fancy very professional table lamp laying on the floor.

Inspiration

I wanted to capture the kind spirit in both of my subjects, the handsome man and sweet dog. Two best friends doing what they do best, keeping each other company and enjoying the awesome music. It really is one of my very favorite photos.

Editing

The gentleman was wearing a hat and sweatshirt with a logo on them, I removed the logos with photoshop, I also changed it into a black and white photo to help the focus remain on the subjects. Thats it.

In my camera bag

I usually have my Nikon D3x and my D4s in my bag, 24-70mm , 70-200mm, I really love the 50mm 1.4 Ziess lens, it is just magical to me. I was girl scout growing up so I like to always be prepared for anything. With these awesome lenses I am usually ready for whatever may come my way.

Feedback

To capture a great shot, you don't need elaborate sets, or fancy costumes. This was such a simple set up. Just a guy playing his guitar and his good dog just being happy to be near him. It's just a matter of getting your subjects to feel comfortable and relaxed. We had a great time making this photo and I got to hear some amazing guitar playing.
