Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the remote mountains of Tennessee at the home of my favorite aunt and uncle who have passed on and will forever remain in my heart of hearts.

Time

Photo taken in the Fall of 2015 about 4 PM as the sun was considering it's setting and choosing to bathe the scene with a light that is not ordinarily seen

Lighting

The lighting was so subtle as it gently painted and enhanced the beautiful Fall colors of the leaves. The light was there precisely for this scene and I was fortunate enough to witness to it

Equipment

I take all my photos with an old iPhone5. Hand held in a very contorted body position to get the angle. It was not a pretty sight to be sure. An iPhone5 is such a fickle character that one must move in all sorts of positions to allow the antiquated spot metering to get the right exposure Actually it is a real Pain.

Inspiration

My favorite aunt and uncle built a beautiful log home just prior to World War II. My uncle, a modern Leonardo De Vinci, hand made a split rail fence out of Chestnut rails leading almost a mile up a very rocky and steep road to the home. The home and property were Featured in Southern Living Magazine. My favorite place in the world to visit as a child, it pained me to see all that he had done slowly decay and once again return to the forest from which it came. This was a part of the fence that was still somewhat standing and is my Tribute to two of the best people I have ever known. This photo is for them. I buried them both on their property.

Editing

Post editing included cropping, sharpening, removal of leaves and some color enhancement of the background fall foliage. The rest is as it was intended to be.

In my camera bag

I carry my iPhone5 and a prayer in my heart hoping that I am given the vision to "see" and the "fortune" to capture what I see. The iPnone5 is very limited in what I am able to capture, and that is the challenge I choose to take up on every outing. I certainly cannot compete with those who have "Real" cameras, yet that is what makes it all the more challenging and pushes me to capture the 'essence' of what I am Blessed to see. I do have a real camera, but that often makes it too easy to get good pictures. I Love the challenge and the fact that I am forced out of my comfort zone. physically, mentally and photographically (if there is such a term).

Feedback

I could go into all kinds of fancy terms and advice for how to render a photo such as this. Unfortunately it would be leading everyone astray. After all, what can an iPhone5 do? If I was to give 'advice' it would be: When you go out to capture 'What Is', spend a moment with your eyes closed. Breath In the air surrounding the scene. Feel the Graciousness and Wonder of that which envelopes you. Allow the essence of your surroundings to enfold you in their spirit. When you open your eyes, you will "See that which is in plain view that the others are blind to". Then simply flow and push the button. You will "Know" what to do.
