Behind The Lens
Location
This image was taken in Rietvlei Game Reserve in Pretoria, South Africa. I am a self taught amateur photographer with a deep passion for wildlife photography, which makes it perfect to have this small reserve close to home where I can indulge and sharpen my skills.Time
It was around 07:30 am. The sun had just risen and created a lovely backlight on the egret, while the reeds behind it were still mainly in shadow, creating a striking contrast to the white bird.Lighting
This was taken in natural light.Equipment
I used a Canon EOS450D with a 70-300mm kit lens. No other equipment was needed.Inspiration
I had been watching this bird feeding in the shallows for about 15 minutes, getting a few mediocre shots when suddenly it developed an itch and threw his wing up into the air, catching the sun.... The perfect moment as far as I was concerned..Editing
When converting from RAW I only bumped up the contrast, since it was a little flat from shooting into the sun. I never like to over process any image and felt that was enough enhancement. In my camera bag
These days I am lucky to have upgraded to a Canon EOS 7D with a Sigma 150 - 500mm lens, but my trusty 450D will always be in my bag for the closer shots.Feedback
Whenever you want to photograph wildlife, you have to have tons of patience! Rather spend half an hour with one species before moving on to whatever may be waiting for you around the next bend... It also helps to know the behavior of the animals, they often give a cue to what they are going to do next and if you are aware of those cues, that is where you can catch them in mid action, changing a normal boring shot into a winner.
