I took this photo just north of Greenvale in Victoria. I drove past this paddock twice a day for years thinking "I should really take a photo of that tree, it's pretty awesome". so one day I stopped on the side of the road, climbed over the fence and took a few shots on my old Nikon, and now here it is.Time
it was just before sunset. the shot is taken facing east, so the sun is shining right on the tree trunk.Lighting
the natural light was perfect. sun starting to set behind me, some darkening clouds in the sky, seemed a perfect opportunity. sunset offers a beautiful rich gold colour, not just light,Equipment
Nikon D60X camaera with a Nikon 18-135mm lens. no flash, no tripodInspiration
this tree just had to be shot! it had been teasing me to shoot it for years. just as well I took the photo when I did, it fell down a week later.Editing
just a little bit of brightening and burning in photoshop. I was a bit of a novice when it came to photoshop back then, I still love editing to extreme dark and light, high contrast has always been an attraction to me.In my camera bag
I now carry a Nikon D7100, Sigma 35mm lens, Tamron 70mm lens and the old Nikon 135mm lens. once in a while I also pack my Nikon 50mm lens too. I have a couple of external flashes which I use once in a while.Feedback
ok, if you see it, shoot it! it's as simple as that. take your time when you're shooting, if you think your photo could be better, do it better. there is no clean straight answer to this type of thing. everything, from time, sunlight, clouds, colour just sprung out at me on the day. when you shoot, spend time with your camera first. set the ISO, set the aperture, shutter speed. if it doesn't work, change the settings until it does. with photoshop, edit in every way you know how, you'll get different results and from that you'll find what you're looking for.
