I took this photo in Marblemount, WA at a family reunion. It was a spur of the moment shot and I'm so happy I was able to capture it.Time
I don't think I could of captured a better photo at this particular time in the day. My family and I had traveled almost 2 hours in early August of 2015, when we had finally arrived to our destination it was about 4:30PM and 95 degrees out.Lighting
I'm a self-taught portrait photographer and pride myself on my candids so I constantly have my camera attached to my face in case I see something worthy if capturing. I'm all about natural light and when my sister and I were dipping our feet in river, I took my opportunity to capture her face! There were just enough trees to shadow us to really show her face in all it's raw glory and one of my most favorite parts of this photo is the shadow of the leaves that were above her. I really feel that the lighting makes this entire photo.Equipment
I took this shot with my Canon Rebel T3i and 75-300MM lens, oh and my lucky camera strap from 1973.Inspiration
Honestly, I was expecting to get some beautiful shots of my sister this day as we were to be outside for a majority of the summer evening; this just turned out way better than expected. She happened to be goofing off in the river, I saw the lighting and asked her to look at me and be serious...and she did!Editing
I'm all about post-processing! It really turns your photos into one of a kind works of art, but with this particular shot I didn't have to do too much. I converted the image into black and white and dodged/burned her eyes a bit to make them pop a bit more then they already do. I normally would edit out any facial issues like acne, etc but felt that if I kept what little she did have, it would make the photo more unique. In my camera bag
I always keep my 75-300MM attached to my camera in my bag. I own a very small bag that I can toss on my shoulder so I'm able to hike easily. For being so small though I can keep my Canon Rebel T3i, my 75-300MM lens, 18-55MM lens, lens wipes, a flimsy flash diffuser ( that I rarely use) and a few pens.Feedback
Patience, patience, patience! It's photos like this that make me love candid shooting so much. It comes from knowing what you're doing, but it also comes with the joy of living and experiencing everything as a whole and capturing the present; and when it comes to capturing the present you need to be prepared such as having your camera on you continuously, setting your settings up before you start on your shooting journey and making sure everything is clean, that way you can just point and click when something amazing happens! I also think it's important to not over post - process any portrait photography. I try to keep my client looking as real and they are in their photos.
