Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on the shore of Lake Superior just outside of Houghton, Michigan.

Time

This shot was taken in the evening. A storm started rolling in off the lake and I wanted to capture the storm clouds. When all of a sudden in the middle of my shoot, the sun peeked through for only a minute or two.

Lighting

The lightening ended up being perfect for this shot once the sun peeked through the clouds.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D60 and it was on a tripod. This is an HDR shot composed of 5 shots to get the most out of the shadows and sunlight.

Inspiration

Like I had mentioned earlier, I was inspired by the storm rolling in off the lake.

Editing

I used Photomatrix to post process this photo. I took 5 different pictures of the same shot, rapid fire, using a tripod, and put the 5 shots together using Photomatrix.

In my camera bag

I usually carry an extra charger battery, different darkening filters, and my tripod. Oh and some chocolate.

Feedback

If you like the look of HDR shots, I advise for you to get a tripod, this is a must. Without the tripod your pictures will most likely turn out blurry. Once you have a tripod, I would take three photos of the same spot (look for a shot with brightness and shade). The first shot should be overly exposed, the next just a normal exposed shot, and the last one should be under exposed. Then find some HDR software that you can put the three together. There are many different softwares out there to use, just find one that is easy for you to use. Once you find the software you are comfortable using, play around with your shadows and highlights until you get the shot you want. That’s it!
