Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the mining district of Mokopane, Limpopo, South Africa. On the side of a dusty road 60km from the mine.

Time

It was a hot summer afternoon, I had just finished some contract work for the mine, on the way home I spotted this tree among the green and yellow and instantly decided it needed to be photographed.

Lighting

It was by no means the best time of day to have taken the photo, but because of time constraints I had to snap it there and then, I would have had no other chance to go back to the site. But it seems to have turned out okay.

Equipment

They say the best camera in the world is the one you have with you. This photo was taken on my BlackBerry Z30, using my Polaroid sunglasses as a filter. No tripod, no flash, no other equipment than my mobile phone and sunglasses.

Inspiration

At the time really wasn't thinking about photography at all. when we rounded a bend in the road, this purple tree came into view and took my breath away. The fact the Jakaranda trees are found all over southern Africa and that we where out in the open Savanna grasslands just made this something special to capture.

Editing

I have to admit I did tweak the photo a little, I can't remember exactly what I did, I think it was to do with brightness, contrast and a few other things.

In my camera bag

Usually I carry my Sony Alpha 350 with a 70 - 300mm and a 17-55mm lens. But in this case I didn't have I with me.

Feedback

I am by no means a pro but valuable advice I learned is use the rule of thirds, be creative and be unusual.
