Behind The Lens

Location

Wind Swept (Mohon Church) Mohon Church: Remnants of a long-gone Commonwealth (Government) of the Philippines era. This Mohon Church in Tanjay is a significant Philippine historical landmark during the Commonwealth presidency of Pres. Manuel L. Quezon. His whole entourage held a cabinet meeting here, one night, prior to their next stop in Iloilo.

Time

I was traveling that time and the mode of transportation was riding the local transit bus from Bacolod City, some 5 hours away from my hometown, in Dumaguete City, Philippines. On the way home, I anticipated for this "wind-swept moment" (some sort of claircognizance) right when I caught a glimpse of its 7AM ambient glory. I was standing from my seat, making all mind and body energies attuned to strike my balance, while the bus sped away — there was no other way to shoot it, because the bus driver won't allow stopping for the heck of photography! :) The vantage point, compared to the ground level, was twice my height.

Lighting

Everything that is great photography is all about lighting. The striking drama will unfold once you harness that "subtlety." It takes a lot of self-practice for your eyes to find and capture something unique or different from the rest of your set of photos. It's a make or break it phenomenon. Always find the non-direct, diffused or soft light that adds up to the flair of landscape photography. Combine them in various degrees to accentuate your subject with your keen observation. It's not just lighting, but finding right lighting that makes for great photography.

Equipment

First off, basics: I was using a defunct camera, A Nikon D40 to capture this image. This was last January 13, 2009. How time flies. Indeed! It was sheer determination to focus; to get the right shot, inside a speeding bus on the way to my home city.

Inspiration

I wanted to depart from the usual "postcard-esque" type. I desired something more vibrant and spontaneous; preferably chaotic out of the ordinary stillness and the basic order of things. So this is what I bargained for: Never thought I'd be riding into this. Riding buses will never be the same again. So much fun!

Editing

Because I was inside the bus, the lighting inside is more diffused and darker than the outside. To achieve normalcy, I had to adjust the RAW settings of Temperature and Exposure — along with Clarity, Vibrance and Saturation to bring out satisfied intended results.

In my camera bag

For my portraits and travel: Camera & Lens: Nikon D90, 18mm kit lens, 50mm, and AF Nikkor 70-300mm.

Feedback

Be ready to shoot RAW always. There's enough room to adjust in case you missed the vital points of capturing the right settings especially in challenging situations.
