Location
This photo was taken across from the "Carbide" Willson Ruin in Chelsea, Quebec, on the edge of Meech Lake. I took this photo during one of my many visits to Gatineau Park, just outside Canada's national capital, Ottawa.Time
This particular image was taken at the end of a full-day Meetup group workshop. We had covered a lot of ground that day, and this was our last stop.Lighting
Like all of the forested areas of Gatineau Park, the tree canopy softened the 3 p.m. sunlight on a clear October day. It also helped to darken the area a bit, so I could get a long exposure to capture the movement of the rushing river.Equipment
At the time, I was using a Nikon 5200 with a Nikkor 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 lens, which was set at 55mm. To get the long exposure of the rushing water, I used a tripod to steady the image.Inspiration
The rushing water in this area is great for capturing movement, which was the lesson for this part of the workshop. I already knew the basics, but the instruction fine-tuned my technique, which I think is evident in this image.Editing
For the most part, this image is close to what came out of my camera. Shooting at ISO 200 and f/11, the exposure was set to 1/5 second. I used Photoshop to crop and adjust the levels, to ensure the image covers the full range of the histogram and the midtones are more vibrant. The watermark was also added in Photoshop. In my camera bag
My main go-to gear consists of a Nikon D7500 now. I tend to keep a UV filter on it, if for no other reason than to protect the lens from scratches. I also have a polarizing filter. I also typically carry a Metz 58-AF2 flash and keep a PhotoPro tripod in the car.Feedback
Covering 36,131 hectares (361 square kilometres), Gatineau Park lies in an area where the Canadian Shield meets the St. Lawrence Lowlands and where the Gatineau River meets the Ottawa River. This National Capital Commission conservation area is a year-round attraction for nature and history enthusiasts alike. Pack a picnic so you can spend a full day exploring the lakes, rivers and historic sites. The "Carbide" Willson Ruin is also very photogenic. (https://www.viewbug.com/photo/63563721) It was directly behind me when I took this shot, so a good example of why it's important to always look behind you to find another great image.
