I think that sunsets become way more interesting when the landscape includes either clouds or water. In this breathtaking location (base camp of Tunupa Volcano in Salar Uyuni), I got both! Together, they reflect the greatness of the daily natural wonder. I felt humbled by the massive salt flats, milliards of clouds and golden shades bathing this glorious landscape.

Behind The Lens

Location

The picture was taken in Bolivia's Salar de Uyuni. Right next to our little hotel made of salt by Tunupa volcano and a short walk from a cave with mummies.

Time

This was taken at sunset. It was October, so it was around 7pm. We had just arrived to our modest hotel of salt after a day of exploring Salar de Uyuni. I noticed the epic sunset, so in a rush, I dropped off my bag and ran out with my camera in the hopes of capturing the majestic sunset over a legendary landscape.

Lighting

This picture captures a moment of the light show that the sun delivered over Salar de Uyuni. Not sure if it was the angle of the sun or the vastness of the land, but I had never seen such vibrant colours reflected on the clouds. It looked like there was a fire in the sky! Absolutely amazing to watch.

Equipment

Nikon Coolpix. No tripod and no equipment. This resulted in me trying to balance on top of a rock (climbed in a rush not to miss the light) in order to get a good picture of the natural wonder.

Inspiration

Wanderlust and appreciation of the natural phenomenon that sunsets entail were my inspiration. I am a fan of sunsets. I think that they are under-appreciated because they happen every day. If sunsets took place once per year, the whole world would stop and watch in awe. I am fascinated by sunsets because the light changes every second providing different colours and effects, which bring to life different aspects of the landscape. I was only spending one night in Salar de Uyuni, so this sunset was my only chance to capture such magical light show.

Editing

Just little adjustments on the framing of the picture.

In my camera bag

Nothing. Just my all terrain camera hanging from my neck ready to capture some of the amazing views that I often come across whilst exploring.

Feedback

For me, adventure and photography come hand in hand. So, in my travels, I often chose the practically of the Nikon Coolpix. It is light, robust and takes decent pictures. That empowers me to take the camera with me wherever I go (e.g. when I climb up a rock, go paragliding, diving underwater or kayaking) without worrying about its weight or it breaking. I feel that this gives me the freedom to explore and find something beautiful that I can immediately capture with my camera before the moment passes.
