Behind The Lens

Location

On our property, Labillardiere Estate, Lighthouse Road, Bruny Island, Tasmania. www.brunyislandexperience.com

Time

Early morning and late afternoon, marsupials come out to forage, so it's the perfect opportunity to capture them.

Lighting

43 degrees, 17', 23" south.

Equipment

Canon 5D Mark III, Canon EF 400mm f/4 DO IS On the ground perhaps 20 metres from subject, hand held without flash. I'm used to hand held imagery given I have spent nearly 24 years capturing native orchids with a macro lens whilst prone. Native terrestrial orchids are very tiny in Tasmania. www.allegrabiggsdale.com

Inspiration

I love our native fauna, this was a young Pademelon joey (marsupial) that had recently climbed out of her mum's pouch. For me there is nothing more heartwarming to see a young one survive the sometimes very harsh conditions.

Editing

A little processing, cropping and a bit of contrast. That's it.

In my camera bag

Essentially the camera with a 50mm 1:1.2, our Canon 70-200mm and the 400mm as outlined above.

Feedback

Find the level of the subject, focus on his/her eyes, same as you would with a bird.
