Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at Old Car City, White, GA while on a photo outing with two friends.

Time

It was about 3:30 p.m. By then we were exploring separately, and we all had covered a lot of ground. For those who haven't been to OCC, it's a photographer's paradise for those who like shooting dilapidated and rusty cars, trucks and gas pumps!

Lighting

The lighting was dappled sunlight.

Equipment

At that time, I was shooting with a Nikon -- a D700. My lens was a 24-70mm at 31mm, and the camera was on a tripod.

Inspiration

I had taken *a lot* of detail photos that day, but not any environmental shots. I was attracted to the character that the rust and broken glass gave to the pump, and being able to see the price of gas during its last day of operation was like looking back in time. The position of the truck was a nice bonus.

Editing

I try to keep my post-processing to a minimum (though it doesn't always turn out that way!). In Photoshop, I gave this image a saturation boost, a curves adjustment, tweaked the sharpness, and increased the contrast.

In my camera bag

I started shooting with a Fujifilm X-T100 about two years ago, and it's the first thing I pack. My go-to lens is an 18-55 mm f/2.8. I try to travel light, so my other lens would depend more specifically on what I'm shooting. I also typically carry a small reflector/diffuser, a polarizing filter and step-up rings, an iPhone, lens cloth, cleaning pen and a remote shutter release. Add tripod if needed...(Hmmm. Maybe I don't travel light!)

Feedback

The lighting at Old Car City was a challenge. On the day I was there, the sun would peek through the pine trees, creating dappled sunlight on the car surfaces. I was fortunate to have packed a diffuser. So with the tripod on the camera and a wireless remote, I used my free hand to manipulate the diffuser.
