Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at home in New Zealand, it was possibly one of the first photos I took with my new camera. Every time now I get out my camera my dog, Indi, poses and tries to get in every shot!

Time

It was probably about midday after I had received my new camera in the post, my family was all sitting around having a go and helping me figure out how to use it. At this point, she was staring at my brother over my shoulder and I just thought that it would make a good blissful looking photo, especially coming from a dog.

Lighting

As I said before it was midday, and the sunshine was streaming in through the two windows, one behind the dog and the other to the right. It was the perfect time as the sun was not a glare, yet there was enough to lighten the picture.

Equipment

This was shot with a Canon 700D, with no tripod or flash.

Inspiration

You see sometimes it is so hard to get people to present emotion on cue, which is why when I do shoot people I like to catch them off guard, but the thing about animals is that they don't hide their emotions; emotions being hunger, thirst, playfulness. I saw in her face a look of complete bliss, I mean she snagged the couch, what other dog wouldn't be happy with that! It's so much easier to capture emotions in animals whether you believe they have them or not. The fact that I could see raw emotion in her was the reason that I wanted to capture it and make not something of the past but something that could be remembered on my mantelpiece.

Editing

I usually use Picasa, a basic photo processing software, only to remove any glare that did manage to make its way into the image, and to bring the colour out a little more.

In my camera bag

I'm merely a beginner in the photography scene, which is why I only have my Canon 700D camera and 52mm lens.

Feedback

If you want to see emotion, you have to capture the animals attention, they cannot be distracted by another activity, unless you want to capture an action shot. By calling their name or some sort of calling sound, or even treats you will be able to get them focused on you if they are running around. I just caught my dog at the right time, comfortable on the couch, and otherwise forbidden area for her. Just try and get your camera out when they are the least distracted, sitting or lying down, rather than running around chasing something.
