Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my car on the way home from Utah. We were passing through Pocatello, ID. And it had been storming all day. It had just stopped raining in time for the sun to start setting.

Time

It was my favorite time of day; golden hour. Luckily the clouds had just started to part and because of the fog, everything was covered in this beautiful orange glow from the sunlight.

Lighting

Honestly I didn't really do anything special for lighting. It was one of those rare times that it was just perfect all on its own.

Equipment

My picture was shot with my Canon Rebel XTi and a 35mm lens. Funnily enough I hadn't brought any other equipment with me because I hadn't planned to take very many pictures on that particular trip. It was a drive I had taken often and I figured I had photographed that bit of land enough.

Inspiration

I've always love photography involving water. I love the movement and distortion it can bring to a picture. And I just kept staring out my window at this amazing view I was getting. I was enjoying it so much I almost forgot I had a camera! But I wanted to conveying that feeling of just after a storm when everything is settling and new again.

Editing

The only thing I did was saturate the colors slightly as they didn't turn out as vibrant as they had been in person.

In my camera bag

My bag is pretty measly. I usually bring my Canon Rebel XTi which is on it's last leg of life. But I can't seem to part with it. I bring my portrait lens and usually a zoom lens as well. And I usually hide a granola bar in there because it can be hard work getting that perfect shot!

Feedback

Don't wait for perfect weather. Some of my favorite pictures were from when I just got in the car and started driving. Don't be afraid of rain or clouds. Grey moody skies can be your friend. If you're looking at something and it speaks to you then take a picture, even if you think it won't be impressive to other people. I see photography as a language and you just need to find the people who speak the same language as you.
